BULKEX assumes extra significance

Monday, 18 July 2011

For Australian Bulk Handling Review

As companies engaged in the movement of bulk materials contemplate the effects of the carbon tax, BULKEX in Sydney, to be held 25-27 October, assumes extra significance.

Agriculture, mining, freight transport, shipping and retailing will all be affected by the tax, either directly or indirectly.

Theres nothing they can do about the tax but they can look to more efficient and less costly ways to operate, and thats where BULKEX will be valuable.

BULKEX, the largest exhibition in Australasia for the bulk materials and powder handling industries will be held on October 25-27 at the Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park.

To be run concurrently and co-located with the Sydney Materials Handling Show and The Safety Show Sydney, BULKEX will showcase the very latest in bulk handling, materials handling and manual handling equipment, services and training.

Total solution

Ahrens is a fourth generation family business with construction and engineering operations throughout Australia, with a growing reputation as a supplier of materials handling facilities for the mining and agricultural sectors.

By combining internal design and construction services with equipment sourced overseas, Ahrens offers a total solution for materials handling and storage projects, from engineering, steel fabrication and site construction to installation and commissioning of electrical, mechanical and processing equipment.

At BULKEX, Ahrens will showcase the Pebco range of loading systems and equipment, and the Famson range of hoppers, conveyors and drive over hopper stackers.

Conveyor systems

RUD Chains Pty Ltd will showcase the highly wear-resistant RUD conveyor systems, that combine the advantages of calibrated RUD case hardened round link chains with pocket heels and deep well apron pans.

The system ensures the chain is isolated from the material being conveyed, thereby providing effective transfer in both horizontal and inclined conveying.

Also highlighted will be the RUD Apron Feeders, suitable for heavy duty applications such as ash, wood, concrete and biomass materials, as well as for steel, concrete, glass and plastic recycling conveyor systems.

RUD Apron feeder conveyors are suitable for a diverse range of conveying and bulk material handling applications, with the benefit of low maintenance and optimum chain life.

Flexible connector

Nu-Con Australia will exhibit its innovative clampless BFM Fitting, a flexible connector system for bulk powder processing operations.

A common problem with chutes carrying powder to various processing machines is leakage from the flexible connectors that join the chutes. The conventional method of using a hose clip or a metal clamp (usually tightened with a screwdriver or a spanner) can result in the connection bursting under pressure from heat and build-up of product.

Its a common problem in industries where powder is processed or is a by-product. In a milk factory, for example, it can mean milk powder spread over the factory floor.

The BFM Fitting is a lamp-less connector with a flexible metal band to snap it into place in less than 40 seconds. It expands from the inside, meaning the more pressure it comes under, the tighter it will seal. And there are no crevices in which powder can build up.

Nu-Con will also exhibit its low noise, high efficiency TYR Blowers and Exhausters.

Advanced thermal imagers

Production stoppages due to conveyor failure can be disastrous, regardless of whether its a light-duty package handling roller type used in a distribution centre or massive ore-handling belt conveyor.

Thermal imagers are now finding wider use to detect impending failure before it occurs by identifying hot spots so corrective action during scheduled production shutdowns can be taken.

Fluke Australia will be exhibiting the latest in its P3 Series thermal imagers, which offer superior image quality and a one-handed easy-to-use interface: with just a push of the thumb, go from straight point-and-shoot to adjusting the focus manually, add picture-in-picture and even add voice comments.

Fluke offers the only on-camera blended infrared and visible image for better diagnosis, using precision visible and IR image alignment.

Fluke will also be presenting its Fluke 37x Series clamp meters, Fluke 810 Vibration Testers.

 Innovative loading systems

When it comes to transporting raw materials, B&W Mechanical Handling will show how to take efficiency to a new level with innovative loading systems.

The B&W Mobile Shiploader, mounted on a single chassis equipped with a travel system allowing both powered in-line and parallel movement, uses an a hydraulically adjustable boom with a 360 degree rotational trimming chute. Narrow jetties, unsuitable for more cumbersome fixed or rail mounted shiploaders, are no problem for the B&W.

For example, at the Port of Salaverry in Peru, the B&W Mobile Shiploader loads into 25,000 DWT vessels copper and gold ore, with densities as high as 2,900 kg per cubic metre, arriving at the quay area via 30 tonne trucks every two or three minutes.

B&W will also present a Rail Wagon Unloading System for coal and iron ore that uses a heavy duty belt style feeder in a shallow pit beneath the rails, providing major cost savings over conventional below rail hopper systems.

Motor shield

Dust, fine powder, slurry and spillage are the enemy of electric motor drives in bulk handling and process operations.

Environmental debris and particles can quickly destroy bearings, windings and brushes on expensive electric motors and add considerably to services, maintenance and repair bills.

Kinder & Company will present K-MotorShield motor covers as a simple solution to assist in minimising motor maintenance and service costs.

Kinder will also display its mobile conveyor training rig with motorised head pulleys, belt cleaners, skirting arrangements, impact and standard weight belt supports, belt scales, tru-trac return trainer, safety and belt drift switches and wing/spiral pulleys.

We manufacture what we sell

Prime Manufacturing supplies customers across Australia and New Zealand with a wide range of bulk materials handling products, conveyor components and engineering plastics.

The firms claims an advantage in the marketplace based on its manufacturing capabilities: We manufacture what we sell. Large stock holdings in Melbourne and international factories mean the right stock at the right price is never far away.

Exhibited at the Prime stand will be elevator buckets, belts, bolts and fasteners; conveyor belts, impact bars and conveyor rollers; screw flights; conveyor chains and flights, chain sprockets and nylon gear wheels; sieve cleaners and pan cleaners and sieve cleaning balls and engineering plastics.

Vast elevator bucket range

4B Australia will be showing products from three main areas, bucket elevator components, chain conveyor components, and electronic monitoring systems and level controls.

It claims to have the worlds largest range of steel and plastic elevator buckets, including the popular Starco and Super Starco buckets, CC-S and Atlas AA elevator buckets, and is the leading supplier of elevator bolts and elevator belting that can be supplied slit and punched to customer specifications.

4Bs drop forged conveyor chains are suitable for heavy duty and highly abrasive applications. The patented Bolt n Go system for forged and round link conveyor chain requires no welding and there is no need for removal from the conveyor for repairs.

Also on display will be the Watchdog Elite and T500 Elite multi-functional hazard monitoring systems that monitor belt and pulley alignment bearing temperature, belt speed and blocked chute conditions on bucket elevators and conveyors.

The way to gain traction

Express Material Transfer Technologies (EMTT) will present an alternate means of provisioning locomotives with traction sand.

The Sandpiper does away with pneumatics, employing an Olds Elevator to elevate the traction sand from a hopper, which is then gravity fed into the locomotive sand boxes.  Each Sandpiper is designed to suit specific client requirements.  The Sandpiper can be portable, site installed, or installed in a semi-permanent location.

The Olds stationary auger vertical conveyor technology (dual winner of the Australian Bulk Handling Awards 2006, Innovative Technology award) easily integrates with conventional bulk and powder handling equipment to gently lift without segregation or dust generation sand and dense abrasives as well as grains, foods, pellets or flakes.

It has extremely low wear, requires minimal maintenance and has very high reliability. Applications include volumetric control, explosion prevention and in-process temperature control.

EMTT and DSH Systems (Dust Suppression Hopper) will be exhibiting together.

Stainless steel feeder

Acromet, well known for specialised and standard dry material feeder applications, will be showcasing an all stainless steel feeder, in which not only the chamber and auger, but also the motor and gearbox are stainless.

The unit is designed and built to accommodate cleaning-in-place (CIP) processes. Any industry, such as food, pharmaceutical or specialised chemical manufacturing, which require meticulous cleaning, will find the equipment invaluable.

The unique design centres on the self-discharging and conditioning blades within the chamber itself, that allow maintenance of a fluid state providing consistent feed and minimising rat-holing or bridging with products that are difficult to feed.

Acromet provide installation, servicing and parts as commitment to ongoing customer support. A video at the stand will show other equipment.

Instrumentation for dust collection

Dwyer Instruments will be exhibiting a total instrumentation solution for the dust collection and powder bulk handling industries the series DCT timer boards that fit any dust collection application, from the most complex to the most basic.

A complementary product is the new series DCS/RDCS Springless Diaphragm Valves that offer durability and reliability for an exceptional cleaning pulse. Dwyer will also exhibit a variety of level controls designed for bulk solid level monitoring including the series PLS paddle level switch, CLS2 capacitance level switch, and TFLS tuning fork level switch.

Also on show will be the series PRV pneumatic roller vibrator, APV Piston Vibrator, and BAP bin aerator pad that keep material flowing freely, preventing costly shut downs or material loss due to bridging or plugging.

These products and more will all be on show at BULKEX in Sydney. As a bonus, concurrently running and co-located will be Sydney Materials Handling and The Safety Show Sydney.
